Elon Musk, head of the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) , has sparked controversy by hinting at the possibility of drone attacks against Mexican cartels , after they were designated as terrorist organizations by the US government .
The controversy arose after the leak of an official document from the United States Federal Register , dated February 19, 2025, announcing the designation of six Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations as of February 20 of the same year.
Faced with this situation, Elon Musk , who has assumed a leading role as a spokesman for the US government through his platform X (formerly Twitter), did not hesitate to launch a controversial threat to Mexico .
In a message posted on his X account, Musk claimed: "That means they are eligible for drone strikes ," accompanying his message with the leaked document designating the cartels as terrorist groups.

While the CIA 's MQ-9 Reaper drones are not currently armed, Musk's statement suggests that this situation could change in the future, further escalating tensions between the two countries.
