If you plan to travel to the United States , it is essential to know and respect customs regulations , especially when it comes to transporting cash. According to the Customs and Border Protection Office ( CBP ), failure to comply with these regulations can result in fines of up to $500,000 (more than 10 million Mexican pesos) and a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

How much cash can you bring into the US?

Any person entering or leaving the United States with more than $10,000 (approximately 203,776 Mexican pesos) must declare it to the CBP . This limit applies not only to cash in bills and coins, but also to other financial instruments such as:Traveler's checks, Personal, business or bank checks,Promissory notes and money orders, Bearer shares or securities.

If a traveler fails to declare an amount greater than $10,000, the authorities can confiscate the money in its entirety, regardless of its origin or destination.

"Members of a family filing a joint or family return are prohibited from having others in the group carry money on their behalf, so no member can carry more than $10,000," CBP clarifies .
